Loved this little game. A neat cross between a loot shooter and an advancement-path chooser. The premise is that you are trying to clear slimes from a 2D plane in the quickest way possible to advance levels. There are about ten different ways to embellish your stats along the way, which are introduced at a good pace as you play the game. You can choose to concentrate on one or all of them at the same time and slowly build up your stats.

There is also a bit of twitch gaming involved, with the player being the firepower behind the targeting. Sometimes the choice between keeping your target the same (to bleed out some slimes) comes into conflict with spray targeting, which allows for incremental hit-point degradation across the board and lets your “other” methods of killing take the slimes out the rest of the way. It’s a neat dynamic.

Towards the end, the board started to look similar to Ball x Pit, with the chaos of so many things bouncing around at once.

I would give Maktala a solid 7 out of 10 for a fun little game. It was played on PC with a mouse. It seems like it would lend itself well to the Steam Deck, though it’s unclear how mouse targeting would be mitigated—perhaps it uses the d-pad instead. That wasn’t tested.

Fun game.
